Installation Instructions for B4Free Linux CD for Windows
Introduction
B4free
Linux CD for Windows is a distribution of B4free and Click'n'Prove on
one CD-ROM to be run, along with a Linux system, inside Microsoft
Windows.
The installation requires 2.1 GB of free space on one hard drive and at least 128 MB memory (256 MB recommended).
This
distribution is safe, since it does not require any hard drive
partitioning and the existing Windows system configuration is not
changed.

Installing B4free Linux CD for Windows
The
installation process takes about 15mn on a recent PC and is quite easy.
In case of trouble, first read carefully this documentation and then
contact B4free.
Step 1: Installation
Under
Windows insert B4free Linux CD (if you have several CD-ROM drives, use
the first one according to the BIOS settings). Topologilinux setup
should start (or else just run "Topologilinux-setup.exe" on the CD).
Close the windows explorer browsing the CD and make sure that no other
application should access the CD during this install. Click on
"Continue".
Choose
a hard drive with more than 2.1GB free space where to install
Topologilinux. The default settings should be fine: hard drive C:,
Linux
file system size 1,800 MB and swap size 240 MB. Do not decrease these
sizes. Files are created inside directory C:\tlinux5. Click on "Create
Files".
Click "No" to Grub boot manager installation.
Click
"Yes" to Colinux installation. Set the memory to the Linux system to
"128 MB", unless you have less than 256 MB memory. Click on "Install".
Under Windows XP, the system may complain that the software has not been signed. Click on "Continue".
Click on "Continue setup in colinux mode". Two black terminals should appear.
In
the Cooperative Linux Console, when you are asked to choose a keyboard
configuration, press "Enter". The Linux system is being installed, this
may take a while. When this is done press "Enter". When the Linux
system has been shut down, close the Cooperative Linux Console window.
Step 2: Linux Installation
Start
Topologilinux from Windows start menu:
"start/Programs/Topologilinux/Start Topologilinux". The Linux system
boots and displays messages in the Cooperative Linux Console.
After the boot, login as root: enter "root" at the prompt and then enter "setup".
If
you use a US keyboard, then press "Enter", else enter "1" and choose
your keyboard from the list (French users, please choose fr-latin1).
Press
"Enter" to choose the KDE window manager. In the console window menu,
click on "Monitor/Send Ctrl+Alt+Del" and when the system is halted
close the window.
Step 3: Network Configuration
The
Linux system installed here works in cooperation with Windows through a
virtual network. You need to setup this network connection. From
Windows start menu open "start/Control Panel/Network Connections".
Select the Local Network Connection associated to "TAP-Win32 Adapter V8 (coLinux)", right-click and select "Properties".
In the properties window, select "TCP/IP" and click on "Properties".
Select
"Use the following IP address" and enter the IP address 192.168.0.1 and
the mask 255.255.255.0. Click on "OK". In case you get an error message
saying there is a conflict, then click on "OK" to accept this conflict;
you should disable the local network sharing the same IP address when
using Topologilinux. For more detailed information choose from Windows
start menu "start/Programs/Topologilinux/Colinux network
installation".
The installation is done.
Troubleshooting
In
case something goes wrong, then read again carefully the instructions
above, try to reboot Topologilinux or Windows and eventually uninstall
Topologilinux and reinstall it.
Uninstallation
To uninstall the distribution, choose from Windows start menu "start/Programs/Topologilinux/Uninstall Topologilinux".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Starting B4free and Click'n'Prove
To start B4free and Click'n'Prove select from Windows start menu "start/Programs/Topologilinux/Start Topologilinux".
When
Linux boot is over inside the Cooperative Linux Console, launch Linux X
graphic screen from Windows start menu
"start/Programs/Topologilinux/Topologilinux X". You may choose the size
of the X window and whether it occupies the full screen or a regular
window (note: in full screen you may still display other windows with
the Shift+Tab key). If the X window is not displayed, then check the
network configuration (see step 3) and restart completely
Topologilinux.
In the X graphic screen, login as "training", no password is required, and click on "OK".
Using Click'n'Prove
Click on the B4free icon in the command bar (or type "Click_n_Prove" in a terminal window). Some case studies are available.
Files Transfer
Files
can be easily transferred between Windows and Topologilinux inside a
Windows explorer. In the explorer, the home directory of Topologilinux
is "My Network Places/public samba server (Topologilinux)". To copy a
file to Topologilinux, make sure that the target directory has write
access to anyone, such as "/tmp".
The
samba server needs to be configured only when your Windows workgroup
name is different from WORKGROUP. To determine your workgroup name,
open from Windows start menu "start/Control Panel/System" and select
"Computer Name". If your workgroup is different from WORKGROUP, then
inside Topologilinux, log as root, edit the file "/etc/samba/smb.conf"
and replace WORKGROUP by your workgroup name.
For
a read-only access of your Linux files from Windows, you may also use
explore2fs. From the CD launch "explore2fs/explore2fs.exe". From the
"File" menu click on "Open Image File..." and choose "tlinux5\base.img".
Shutting Down B4free Linux
To
shut down the system, exit Linux X screen: click on the "K" button at
the left of the bottom bar and choose "Logout ...", then confirm by
clicking on "Logout". In the Cooperative Linux Console menu, click on
"Monitor/Send Ctrl+Alt+Del" and when the system is halted close the
console window.
